by Kate Miller

In 2021, Kate was commissioned by Fingal Poetry Festival to create this poem and accompanying film.

As Windmills Did was written to introduce the mills of the Romney Marsh (Kent) – where Kate lives – to the mills at Skerries (Ireland).

The poem considers the life of Britain’s working buildings and their close relationship with the natural elements.

Written in the era of Covid-19, it also reflects upon the emptiness of cities and countrysides alike.
The phenomenon of lockdowns further highlighted the enduring presence of mills in amongst the fading importance of local industrial buildings.

The film was made collaboratively, using a combination of our own footage along with some provided by Skerries Mill.
It was screened on opening night of the festival in 2021.
